From: Ranjit Babu d0153019@ncb.ernet.in To: fsf-web@mm.gnu.org.in Subject: [Fsf-web] Free Software Directory
Hi I don't know how many people actually are subscribed to this list.. but assuming there is a sizeable number, I'd like to suggest we start building a directory for free software in India. Frederick Noronha's article would be a great place to start building from- I have a few pages ready with those he has listed; these are on the lines of the directory built at www.gnu.org. We also need to add search capability to this. Volunteers?
I hereby volunteer to help build the free software directory for fsf-india

We can also have a volunteer required, page. Some other tasks for the site include, details of Free Software Service persons/companies in India, student groups and Free Software enthusiasts in India, and Call for help regarding Free Software Training material.
Ranjith, for the software project we just need to make a single flat file like Software page in gnu.org. Browser search will be sufficient. But if we have enough man power work should be done for Free Software in education part. Educational software Directory with software classified according to age group and subject area. Provision should be provided for submission of reviews. ( I think there should be some software available and can be used with slight modifications.)
BTW savannah project for web site is working and if people are comfortable with CVS we can use it.
Arun.

I emailed Khuzaima Lakdwala about this - his advocacy plan would fit in well with this. But we MUST have a website with complete details on whatever we speak of ready; we can then direct people there for all the info they need. As KLAK put it, we'd be a laughing stock among people like college professors and principals if we don't have _at least_ a website to back up our plans.

Can someone provide any links or notes on this. I'd like to work on this.

I'm interested in this work. (I know CVS). Also I think I can work out a few PHP scripts to do the trick of the educational software stuff. Also when will the "freedom matters" site be starting to work ?

Please suggest a subdomain name under fsf.org.in / gnu.org.in for the web magazine `Freedom Matters'. Then I can ask CVR to do the dns and we can open the articles/RFC's etc. Soon after that I will change the redirect rules on the server.

Hi,
Would something like CVS be useful if we go in for a zope solution too? Doesn't zope offer some kind of concurrent versioning itself? How does it handle concurrent submissions of items?

Yes, no need if we go for zope. But I dont see any need to go for Zope for entire site. For most part static html is enough. (We cant provide more people access to the server.
BTW friends, what about the directory of free software for education ? Hope that project is not dead already ;)
Regards, Arun.
