From: Ranjit Babu d0153019@ncb.ernet.in To: fsf-web@mm.gnu.org.in Subject: [Fsf-web] Free Software Directory
Hi I don't know how many people actually are subscribed to this list.. but assuming there is a sizeable number, I'd like to suggest we start building a directory for free software in India. Frederick Noronha's article would be a great place to start building from- I have a few pages ready with those he has listed; these are on the lines of the directory built at www.gnu.org. We also need to add search capability to this. Volunteers?
I hereby volunteer to help build the free software directory for fsf-india

Let us have a coordinator for this directory. Ranjit, since you started this, would you please be the coordinator? Kanti and other volunteers can compile a list of free software businesses and services in their respective cities/states and submit their lists to Ranjit for integration with the main directory.
As Arun suggested, Ranjit can maintain this list presently as a flat html file, ordered by states and further sub-ordered by cities. The top of the file should contain indexed links enabling state-wise and city-wise navigation.

Ranjit, can you list all the categories of information that should be put for each entry of free-software. I need it for creating a custom application/object for the database, so that the details can be filled and updated easily.

Hi
The categories as of now are : Applications Libraries System Development Games Security Utilities
The information required in each category would be : - Name of the software - Author:Details can be filled and updated easily. - Description: - Email: - Website:
These probably should be mandatory .. maybe we could also add a Location field (B'lore, Mumbai ,etc) so people around can contact the author to offer help.
I've attached a file with the work I've done.. the flat html pages are incomplete. I've been occupied with some work lately. If someone can help out, please check the file named 'fsf-i-projects' in the attachment and add projects that have been left out in the html files.
Prof. Nagarjuna, pls do check if the projects have been allotted to the correct categories.. also, I've checked out the links to whatever is on html, so that should save some work.
And we need more info info on work going on Hurd, Guile, etc in India (I believe AB is working on them with some more ppl); I couldn't find much help anywhere.
Apologies for the length of this email! :)
Regards, Ranjit

I am sorry, I have been *completely* mistaken about the purpose of this directory. I thought we were building a directory of free software *businesses and services* in India.
IMHO, building a list of free software tools and utilities written by Indian authors should not be a priority for FSF-I.
When Ranjit proposed the directory saying that it would be based on Frederick's list, I thought he would be extracting the businesses and authors' information from that list and create entries of those businesses.
A list of utilities and tools may be of value to geeks, programmers and technically adept people but is of almost no use to lay end-users and new comers to free software. What they need most is information about who is the geographically closest contact for all their free software needs -- free software suppliers, service and support consultants etc. THAT should be our priority.
Am I the only one who was so mistaken?

I also agree with Khuzaima

It's actually both! Frederick's list had info on businesses as well as utilities/tools made in India and their authors. I didn't actually think of it as a directory that end users could utilize. A segregation of the directory listing on those lines would be great though. The current list names a product and its author; if there's a company involved, say Peacock solutions, that has also been listed with a link to its website. Maybe we should be listing the utilities out seperately and put up a business directory with a different set of information. I actually thought we would start off with a listing on the lines if the one at www.gnu.org. We do need a list for developers too don't we? And I think Khuzaima's argument is solid - I suggest we have two lists? What's one everyone else's mind?

If you can conatct G. Karunakar karunakar@freedomink.org that will be better, He will be able to provide more info about Indian language projects (especially Hindi). And contact any member in http://www.tamillinux.org (That is an excellent work), LLI at bangalore and lots of other projects are there. The following links also will be usefull http://www.gnome.org/i18n and http://i18n.kde.org. Malayalam GNU/Linux Project is a recent one only, so add info about other language projects(Tamil,Hindi,Kannada,Marathi etc more works are done in those languages). Later I will give info about our works. A link to http://malayalamlinux.sf.net will be enough for now. I can contact those project cordinators and collect info about their works and we can ask any one from each project to join this mailing list to provide info about their works. By doing this I can also volunteer for *free* software directory. Regards, Baiju M

Yes, agreed that is of high priority.
I think that list of project is also needed, so that people get an idea of involvement of Indian developers in Free Software projects and for getting more people to development projects.
